The Rabbis of the Talmud and Midrash employ the term Shechina in a variety of ways in relation to the divine presence. We will review a representative sampling of these usages in order to understand what the Rabbis meant by this term. Rabbi Eric H. Hoffman is currently a teacher of Judaic subjects—Hebrew, Torah commentaries, Talmud, Midrash, and Aramaic—in Fairfield County and at The Academy for Jewish Religion in Riverdale, New York, an independent transdenominational seminary for the training of rabbis and cantors. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, he was ordained at the Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. He completed his Ph.D. candidacy at the HUC-JIR in Cincinnati. He also studied for two years in Israel at the Hebrew University and at the Jewish Theological Seminary in Jerusalem. As a full-time pulpit rabbi he served congregations in Cleveland, Brooklyn and Boston. He was an Assistant Rabbi at Temple Israel 2001-2 and has taught AJL Biblical Hebrew and Talmud Series here every year since then.
